Romantic relationships in video games

Postby Wolfy » Sat Aug 08, 2015 12:31 am

Obviously put there for those of us that enjoy making our character have a love interest in times of extreme hardship, like the Titanic love story, where she let him die in the freezing cold water while she was on a huge floating door. I guess he couldn't fit on there with her million petticoats floating around her.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age, or really anything Bioware I guess. When you're out there blasting alien ass or splitting someone's head open with sword pommel, you're really thinking about honey back home making some warm bread from the microwave.

Do you make your characters have a love-dove relationship?

Don't you also enjoy how it's made for modern times? Guy on guy, girl on girl, guy on cactus, girl on unbalanced washing machine, stuff like that. I guess the message in all of that that they try to make you understand is that love really does have no boundaries whatsoever. :pimp:

The relationship aspect really has nothing to add to it, except for maybe a very awkward final climax(no pun intended, ok maybe) when your character and the love interest are having sex, but they block you from noticing with a tasteful black screen. Unfortunately you can still hear some faint noises. Try having that go on with your mom in the room!

I feel like the extremely complex nature of romantic relationships is so oversimplified in games that it becomes a joke.

I'm actually not even sure love can be accurately conveyed in a video game, but it can elicit emotions and analytical thinking from our own personal experiences.

usually they make you maintain the relationships so it becomes a chore within itself. if it isnt the point of the game i'm not going to have much interest in it.

I guess it's just an added thing for all the little romantics out there that like a little love story mixed in when you're splattering someone's entrails down on the ground and using them as floss. Usually by the end of the game when you've solidified your relationship with the other person as being your "top choice" out of the hen house/rooster pen, you get to see an incredibly awkward CGI granny kiss or something. Also I find it funny that you can flirt with everyone that moves, if you ask me for a little depth others should get insulted instead of standing around in the same place hanging on every bone you throw their way.

well, gamers need exposure to relationships in game, otherwise they'll never have a fake girlfriend in addition to their lack of a real girlfriend

Hahaha...oh, that's kind of sad. I remember Jerry and me went to a Mortal Kombat competition when the new game came out with all the gruesome fatalities and stuff, and this guy (who was late) came in a shabby looking sweater with a stomach you could rest a beer can on, and he had obviously practiced beforehand because he kept playing as Scorpion and spamming the same moves over and over. Then when he won by cheap tactics, he got his free game copy and a shirt that wouldn't have fit him anyway and promptly left. I couldn't help but think he was a sad little basement dweller.
