Risk of Rain (PC)

Postby davepoobond » Thu Oct 30, 2014 6:11 pm

I was playing this a little bit yesterday and the day before when I bought it on humble bundle.

It's not a bad game, but its kind of needlessly hard and there doesn't seem to be any easy way to tell you are progressing in the roguelike progression like unlocking classes or whatever else.

Hey now, computer hardware is something I actually stay up-to-date on.

Quad-core i7, 8GB RAM, 3 hard drives, including a 120GB SSD mSATA drive, and a geForce 650m 2GB
(P.S.: It's a laptop >.>)

Yeah, I know I could obviously get more computer for the money (and have more flexibility with upgrading) with a desktop, but a laptop is just much more convenient for me.

Plus, the base laptop was only like $650 or around there.
Put out like another $150 on the mSATA SSD, and like $80 on a second 1TB drive.
Also going to upgrade the wireless card to AC for like $30, and get a hard drive caddy for the optical bay for like $30, and get another 1TB drive for that.

So, in the end, will end up putting out around $1000 on it, but will have a laptop with 3TB of regular storage and a 120GB SSD, which is pretty nifty.
And those upgrade parts will be useful for whenever I upgrade to another laptop too.

Anyway, frankly, a quad-core i7 and a geForce 650m 2GB is more than enough for the types of games I play 8-)
So, see, I am actually relatively up-to-date on some stuff :green:

i definitely need a laptop. i need an updated mac, so i might get a macbook pro sometime.

i was thinking of a new iMac, but my 2006 iMac is still working and i do most of my main work on my PC nowadays.

i need a laptop to go around and use to do video editing elsewhere and have access to mac-only stuff....

it'd be another 2 grand for that, and i just spend as much on my PC

A Mac?
Psh.

If you do that, you can't do all of the awesome stuff that I've done with my laptop.
And will end up with something worse for twice the price.

"Mac-only stuff?"
The programs, or comparable ones, don't exist for Windows?
And if it's just a matter of being compatible with your home computer, just dual-boot.
Or even better - use the money that you save by not buying a Mac to buy a new home computer as well... and still save money!

there are several video and audio tools that are only on the mac or work better on mac than PC.

i have to be able to use Final Cut Pro, for instance. MPEG Streamclip is a very useful program when i need to use it

Yeah, to be fair, Audio/Video editing is the time I do understand it, since that does seem to be a specialized area there.
For most people though, they just really don't need it. Especially at the prices they're paying for it.

It makes me laugh when I see people talking up the durability angle, while not only stressing the importance of "AppleCare," but paying as much as 2 or 3 equivalent computers.
And then the go-to seems to be "But that touchpad!"
Unless the touchpad cures cancer, it's not worth an extra $1000+

Sorry, I know I kind of tangented this thread from the original Risk of Rain topic.
It's just nice being able to get some thoughts out without the risk of rain from all the Apple fans

i really just dont get the point of the game other than to play it in different ways. which is fine, but there's no goal, and no purpose.

i dont know, it feels like something to play once or twice a month or something.
